Red Sea Situation

As tensions from the Israel-Hamas war continue to intensify, multiple commercial vessels sailing through the Red Sea found themselves caught in a series of maritime attacks in the conflict. These attacks pose a direct threat to international trade and maritime security. The Red Sea and the Suez Canal have been significant waterways for international trade, accounting for about 12% of global trade, and any disruptions in this area have a global impact on shipping and the global supply chains.

With the increasing threats, major shipping lines have reacted very quickly to suspend the passage of vessels through the Red Sea that connects with the Suez Canal, the shortest sea route between Asia and Europe. Ships were re-routed on longer voyages around the Cape of Good Hope, triggering increase in freight costs and additional transit time of 10-14 days. As we witnessed and foresee the number of re-routed vessels growing due to ongoing war risks in the Red Sea, the spilt in approach from the different shipping lines changed just as quickly as it first happened. Following the establishment of US-led efforts, Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG), to prevent attacks in the area, some major shipping lines like Maersk have decided to resume their transit through the Red Sea. However, it's unclear when and how many vessels will resume their passage through the Suez Canal.

Shipping lines are now faced with an option to continue sailing through the Red Sea at the risk of attacks and the increased insurance cost, or to divert their vessels at higher cost and longer transit time. Regardless of the shipping route, it appears that the shipping costs are set to increase as the major shipping lines announced new surcharges in the recent days. The spot rates would probably soar to extreme levels again if the situation prolonged. There are once again concerns that this could impact the price of consumer goods as companies pass on the increased shipping costs to customers. Energy cost are also likely to rise further as more oil companies halt their shipments through the Red Sea.

If the Red Sea situation persist, it will likely have a ripple effect on the rest of the shipping routes, causing equipment shortages, capacity issues etc., once again leading to volatile upheavals in global shipping.
