Pakistan operates three main international deep-sea ports:

1. Karachi Port
2. Port Qasim
3. Gwadar Port

1) Karachi Port

The Port of Karachi is one of South Asia's largest and busiest deep-water seaports, handling about 60% of the nation's cargo. Located in Karachi, the port sits at a strategic point along the 600-mile-long coastline stretching from the Strait of Hormuz to the border with India. Its location and well-developed connections to Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Western China have earned it the reputation as the "gateway to the region."

Karachi Port has two main wharves — East Wharf, with seventeen vessel berths, and West Wharf, with thirteen vessel berths and three liquid cargo berths for POL and non-POL products. The port also has three private container terminals:

• Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT)
• Karachi Gateway Terminal (KGTL)
• South Asia International Container Terminal (SAPT)

Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT – Hutchison Ports)
KICT is Pakistan's leading container terminal and the port and related-services division of CK Hutchison Holdings Limited. Located in the Port of Karachi, west of the Indus Delta on the Arabian Sea, KICT has been in operation since 1998 and has three berths equipped with modern container-handling facilities.

Karachi Gateway Terminal Pvt Ltd (KGTL – East Wharf)
KGTL is a joint venture between AD Ports Group and Kaheel Terminal that will manage, operate, and develop container berths 6–10 at Karachi Port’s East Wharf. Established through a 50-year concession agreement between AD Ports Group and the Karachi Port Trust, KGTL aims to strengthen container capacity and improve efficiency to support global trade. It has five berths equipped with modern container-handling facilities.

South Asia International Container Terminal (SAPT – East Wharf, Hutchison Ports)
SAPT (Hutchison Ports Pakistan) is the country's first deep-water container terminal, designed to accommodate super-post-Panamax ships. Situated at the Keamari Groyne basin, it offers the most convenient access for large vessels entering Karachi and has four berths equipped with modern container-handling facilities.

2) Port Qasim Authority (PQA)

Port Qasim is located in the Phitti Creek area of the Indus Delta region in Karachi. The port began operations in 1980 with a dedicated Iron Ore & Coal Berth for handling bulk raw-material imports for Pakistan Steel Mills. It now has 18 berths with an annual handling capacity of 89 million tons, managing commodities ranging from mineral oils, edible oil, coal, rice, wheat, and cement to fertilizers, general cargo, containers, and LNG at state-of-the-art terminals. Port Qasim is Pakistan's energy hub and its only LNG port.

The port is well connected to the hinterland through all modes of transportation, linking directly to the national highway and motorway networks leading to Afghanistan, the Central Asian Republics (CARs), and CPEC routes. It also connects to the national railway network via a dedicated 14-km railway line and station. Operating 24/7, Port Qasim is truly the "Gateway to National Prosperity."

Qasim International Container Terminal Ltd. (QICT)
QICT operates a container terminal at Port Qasim, approximately 50 km southeast of Karachi, and serves as Pakistan’s gateway to the world. The Muhammad Bin Qasim Port Project is one of the largest port privatization projects in Pakistan, reflecting the government’s commitment to providing the international trade community with a world-class port facility backed by the latest technology and operational efficiency. Over 25 years of operation, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have reached a combined capacity of 1.38 million TEUs, supported by four berths with modern container-handling facilities.

3) Gwadar Port

Gwadar Port is emerging as Pakistan's third major port, alongside Karachi and Port Qasim. Located on the Arabian Sea in Balochistan province, at the mouth of the Persian Gulf just outside the Strait of Hormuz, Gwadar sits near key shipping routes connecting Africa, Asia, and Europe — giving it significant commercial and strategic importance.

Gwadar Port is set to become a gateway port for Pakistan and the wider region, and an excellent maritime hub. As the country's first deep-sea port, it complements Karachi Port and Port Qasim in driving economic growth — for Pakistan generally and Balochistan specifically — by utilizing domestic resources and providing an outlet for the landlocked Central Asian states, Western China, and Afghanistan through transit trade and transshipment facilities. Its mandate is to operate efficiently, effectively, competitively, transparently, and fairly for all stakeholders. Gwadar Port became fully operational on 31 May 2021, including the launch of online booking for cargo delivery.

Gwadar is home to multiple mega-projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), several of which are already complete, with more in the pipeline for future development.

Additional capabilities include full customs formalities and transshipment handling from every Turkish port, plus a 1,200 m² bonded warehouse dedicated to LTL consolidation and cross-docking.

NICHE TRADE LANES

Globelink Pakistan offer a dedicated service for ATT (Afghanistan Transit Trade) cargo — covering United Nations cargo, commercial, and non-commercial shipments.

Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan have established a trilateral trade working group to leverage each country's strengths and expand regional trade access. The initiative reflects the shared strategic vision of Uzbekistan and Pakistan's leadership toward greater regional connectivity. Under this framework, the working group arranges transit exclusively for FCL containers/shipments moving to Uzbekistan via Afghanistan.

Process Flow

1. Import cargo from Karachi to Peshawar
2. On arrival at Peshawar/Torkham border, cross-stuff goods into Afghan trucks
3. Afghan trucks move from Torkham to Hairatan Dry Port/border
4. At Hairatan, cross-stuff cargo from Afghan trucks into Uzbek trucks
5. Uzbek trucks complete final-mile delivery to consignee destinations

Notice: Advance Cargo Declaration (ACD) For Imports Into Kenya

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced the implementation of a new Advance Cargo Declaration (ACD) platform for all cargo destined for Kenyan ports with immediate effect.

Kenya Advance Cargo Declaration (ACD)

1. An approved Advance Cargo Declaration (ACD) Reference Code is mandatory for all shipments destined for Kenya.

2. The 15-digit ACD Reference Code must be shown on the HBL before cargo is loaded.

3. The shipper/exporter is responsible for:

• Registering an account on the KRA ACD Portal https://acd.kra.go.ke
• Obtaining the approved ACD Reference Code.
• Providing all required supporting documents.

4. Required documents include:

• Draft Bill of Lading
• Commercial Invoice
• Freight Invoice
• Export Declaration

5. The ACD application must be submitted using the registered account of the actual shipper/exporter shown on the Bill of Lading. Applications cannot be submitted using a freight forwarder's account on behalf of the exporter.

6. The shipping line/carrier will only process shipments with a valid ACD Reference Code endorsed on the final Bill of Lading.

7. Failure to comply with the ACD requirements may result in customs penalties, shipment delays, or cargo clearance issues. Any fines or additional costs arising from non-compliance shall be for the account of the shipper/exporter.
